Millshaw Meadows Equestrian Center

Millshaw Meadows Equestrian Centre is a family owned and operated facility.  With over 75 years of combined horse experience we can meet you and your horse’s needs.

Pat Newman started her equine career as a teen ager at Victoria Riding Academy.  As a working student she learned from the ground up the importance of good care for horses.  Starting young thoroughbreds and galloping the race horses rounded out her education.  She then worked at Warren Farms a thoroughbred breeding farm.  Working with stallions and starting more young thoroughbreds kept her busy.  She then worked for Bo Mearns at Hunt Valley Farm for 10 years as the barn manager.  Being responsible for 30 horses,  all privately owned,  was certainly a full time job.

Cathie Newman grew up watching her mom at all of these jobs as well as riding herself at a very young age.  She competed all over BC and had the privilege of working with many different coaches, many who are still coaching today.  Marriage and babies took the forefront for a short time but horses called her back.

In 1998 Pat, Cathie and Jamie, with three young children purchased the farm in Mill Bay.  Here they established Millshaw Meadows Equestrian Centre.  For over 20 years now they have been teaching students of all ages how to ride and care for horses.  Their focus is on fun and safety and “the horse always comes first”.

Millshaw Meadows Equestrian Centre is located on 20 acres in Mill Bay.  There are 27 stalls in two barns,  dry all weather turnout for the horses and lockers for the boarders.  We also offer pasture turnout in the summer on a limited basis.  We have a 60’ sand round pen, a 80’ – 180’ indoor riding arena with a heating viewing lounge at one end.  Stay tuned for the new walking track around the field and the 120 x 260 sand outdoor ring coming in 2019.

Our coaching staff consists of owner Cathie Newman, Equine Canada Competition Coach; Joanne Gorle, Instructor and Therapeutic Instructor; and Jennifer Clark, Instructor in training. We offer many different lesson and training programs and if you don’t see what you want on the services page we can customize a program to meet yours or your child’s specific needs. We are pleased to offer school and lease horses as a stepping stone into making the commitment of finding your own well matched long term mount.

For our riders who aspire to compete, we offer a full horse show schedule both locally, provincially, and internationally.  In-house horse shows and clinics also allow our clients to learn, develop, and excel in a fun and relaxing environment.
